Udinese's Bluenergy ground is at the heart of a project to marry football with environmental sustainability. When Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur face each other in the UEFA Super Cup, eyes will be focused on what happens on the pitch. Yet, off the field, something remarkable is already playing out. The stadium's solar park project spans 4,615 metres, and it is spearheading a culture of sustainability that filters down from the top of the club into the community. Magda Pozzo, Udinese's chief commercial officer, is determined to make a difference. The club's kit is now made entirely from recycled polyester, and for each away kit sold this season, they will plant three trees. Udinese have had a partnership with Bluenergy for four years, and it is the energy company funding the cost of the project. The solar panels perched on the stadium's roof produce over 1,000 Megawatt hours of energy per year, enough to render the stadium entirely self-sufficient. This project will reduce costs for the Serie A club, but of far greater importance to Pozzo is that it will lead to enhanced environmental sustainability, saving around 6,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Pozzo sits on the European Club Association Sustainability Committee and represented Udinese at Cop 29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Baku, Azerbaijan, last November. The hope is that the solar park project will, in time, include panels in the stadium's car park to produce further renewable energy. The Super Cup will be hosted at Udinese's stadium, and it will be a great opportunity to showcase the club's commitment to sustainability. Udinese's efforts to reduce their carbon footprint are a great example for other football clubs to follow. The club's fans will be proud to know that their team is taking steps to protect the environment. The UEFA Super Cup will be a great chance for Udinese to show off their sustainable stadium and inspire other clubs to do the same.
